Matthew Carey joined the Affordable Housing Credit Team at Hunt Real Estate Capital in 2016 as Director and Chief Underwriter of FHA products. Mr. Carey was promoted to Managing Director in 2017 and is responsible for the day to day operations of all MAP and LEAN transactions, including oversight and management of the firm’s Quality Control and Procedures plans for the FHA platform. Additionally, Mr. Carey provides oversight on the firms Proprietary lending transactions that contemplate FHA/HUD takeout.
Mr. Carey has over 11 years of experience in processing, underwriting, and screening MAP/LEAN transactions. Prior to Hunt Real Estate Capital, Mr. Carey was Vice President of FHA for Arbor Commercial Mortgage from December 2012–February 2016. In addition to day to day oversight of both MAP/LEAN transactions at Arbor, Mr. Carey filled the role of FHA Chief Underwriter for approximately two of those years. Prior to Arbor, Mr. Carey was at KeyBank Real Estate Capital where he was promoted from Sr. Underwriter to Deputy Chief Underwriter-Healthcare. He was responsible for the oversight of day to day LEAN production, compliance, and screening functions. Prior to Key Bank Real Estate Capital, Mr. Carey spent nearly four years at Love Funding as an FHA Underwriter, responsible for both MAP/LEAN transactions in its Cleveland office.
Mr. Carey started his career in commercial analysis/underwriting at Mellon Mortgage Company, Charter One Bank and Metropolitan Savings and Trust, where he underwrote/analyzed multifamily transactions for the first 5+ years of his career. In total, Mr. Carey has been involved in underwriting multifamily/healthcare assets for approximately 16 years, and as noted, for the past 11 years has worked exclusively with FHA programs.
Mr. Carey holds MAP and LEAN certifications as well as HUD Chief Underwriter Designation and is a graduate of Cleveland State University.
